What is Lutheran.app?
A ministry sign-up tool built for Confessional Lutheran congregations. It addresses a quiet, common problem: a small circle of faithful members ends up carrying nearly every ministry, while others would help if anyone made it clear how. Lutheran.app makes sign-ups visible to the whole congregation, keeps the paper sheets in the narthex in sync with the app, and helps leaders see who's actually committed to each rotation.
What's the problem you're solving?
In most Confessional Lutheran churches, a small circle of faithful people carries almost every ministry — ushers, altar guild, choir, LWML, coffee hour, the boards. Others would help if asked directly, but nobody asks, because nobody has visibility into what's needed. Paper sign-up sheets in the narthex help, but they fragment the picture and get forgotten. Lutheran.app fixes that by giving the whole congregation a shared, up-to-date view of what sign-ups are open.
What can members do?
Browse the ministries at your church, see what's accepting sign-ups, and volunteer in a tap. Members see their own upcoming rotations — 'you're ushering Sunday, November 3' — so they don't forget. Each event shows open role slots (Head Usher, Chalice Bearer, Torchbearer, etc.) so it's clear what's still needed. Members can also leave a ministry cleanly if their season of life changes.
What can ministry leaders and the office do?
Set up each ministry, define its role slots once (Ushers: Head Usher × 1, Usher × 3) and every linked event inherits them. Toggle whether a ministry accepts sign-ups, approve or decline volunteers, and tag members with specific roles (Director, Chairman, Alto). Schedule rotations, create recurring events (weekly, biweekly, monthly), manage households, and send messages when a week is short-handed.
How do named role slots work?
Define a ministry's roles once — Ushers: Head Usher × 1, Usher × 3 — and every event linked to that ministry inherits the same slots. One-off events like Trunk or Treat or a Lenten potluck can define their own (4 setup, 15 candy handlers, 4 evangelists). Members see exactly what's open at a glance, and leaders see which slots are still unfilled.
Do you handle households?
Yes. Group members into households so a family's sign-ups, rotations, and contact info travel together. Useful for coffee hour rotations, meal trains, and anywhere it's natural to reach a household rather than each person individually.
What is a Sign-Up Steward?
A dedicated role for the person who bridges paper and digital. The 75-year-old usher on the narthex clipboard isn't downloading an app — but somebody needs to make sure her name still shows up for Sunday's rotation. The Sign-Up Steward can edit sign-ups on behalf of others and bulk-enter what's on the paper sheets after Sunday service, so nothing falls through the cracks.
Is this an official synodical product?
No. Lutheran.app is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected to any synodical body. It is an independent tool built by people who attend and care about Confessional Lutheran congregations.
Why Confessional Lutheran congregations?
Because ministry life looks different in Confessional Lutheran churches. Altar Guild, Lectors, Acolytes, Communion Assistants, LWML, Sunday School — these aren't generic volunteer categories, they're specific roles that deserve specific language. Scoping this way means the terminology fits without awkward translation.
How do I get my church set up?
Sign in and choose "Set up your church" during onboarding. Enter your church name, city, state, and denomination. You'll become the admin and can start inviting others right away with an invite code.
What if I'm a member and my church isn't on Lutheran.app yet?
Choose "Invite your church" during onboarding. Enter your church name and your secretary or pastor's email — we'll send them an invitation with a link to set up the congregation. In the meantime, explore the demo to see how everything works.
What's the demo church?
St. Martin's of Tours is a sample congregation with a full list of ministries and fictional members. Choose "Explore the demo" during onboarding to see how everything works before setting up your own church. You can switch between different roles — pastor, secretary, Sign-Up Steward, member — to see what each person experiences. The demo data is inspired by figures from the Reformation.
Is my data private?
Yes. Each church's data is completely isolated — members of one congregation cannot see another's information. All connections are encrypted. We don't sell data, run ads, or share your information with third parties.
How much does it cost?
Lutheran.app is free during our early access period while we work closely with our first congregations. After early access, pricing will stay simple: one flat rate per congregation, no per-seat fees.
